Announcement of the SPARC Enterprise product line

Together with their parent company Fujitsu Limited and the mutual partner Sun Microsystems, Inc., Fujitsu Siemens Computers Limited announced on April 17 a new line-up of co-developed and co-manufactured servers delivering mainframe-class reliability at open systems advantages. The new servers, based on the SPARC architecture and running the Solaris(TM) 10 operating system (OS), are the fastest SPARC servers ever, and will be marketed by the companies and affiliates under the “SPARC Enterprise» product brand.

SPARC Enterprise M8000 Sets New SAP-SD World Record

SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark Results, Two-Tier Internet Configuration

The Fujitsu-Siemens SPARC Enterprise M8000 (16 x 2.4GHz SPARC64 VI with 32 Cores & 64 Threads) has broken a World Record for systems with 16 or fewer processors (as of 16th April 2007) by achieving 7,300 users on the SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark Results, Two-Tier Internet Configuration. In the Benchmark the Fujitsu-Siemens SPARC Enterprise M8000 provides a 32% improvement over the16-way IBM p-570 (16 Processors, 16 Cores, 32 Threads) and 30% improvement over the 16-way HP Integrity Superdome (16 Processors, 32 Cores, 64 Threads).

Future Development of Quad-Core SPARC 64 VI+ 'Jupiter' Processor well underway

Quad-Core Processor

The next addition to the respected SPARC64 family, is to be a 4 Core Processor and should offer a signifcant upgrade path for the new SPARC Enterprise Servers. Jupiter will run at 2.7GHz, is built on 65nm technology and continues SPARC64’s rich heritage, built on Fujitsu and Fujitsu-Siemens’ mainframe-class technology background.

This new technology has been designed to maximise on the potential of multi-threaded applications whilst also offering performance advantages to single-threaded software.

Using Fujitsu’s Vertical Multithreading Technology (VMT) each core will handle 2 simultaneous software threads (instruction sequences) at the same time, which over 4 cores a total of 8 threads in parallel. VMT provides a 20% performance improvement on thread-sensitive workloads.

SPARC64 VI+ Jupiter’s 4 Cores will share a large L2 Cache and the same high speed connection to Memory. The bandwidth of the bus supports all cores at maximum capacity.

The die-size or surface area for the new chip will be aproximately 460 square mm and power cosumption will be aproxiately 120 Watts.

The new processor will have the same core structure and high-speed bus technology as the existing SPARC64 VI Olympus and should be supported in the current SPARC Enterprise Server Family.
